Gratitude and Giving (chp.1)

The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.”- Emily Dickerson

Happy Birthday to me!

This is my birthday month. A new year, a new month and one of many possibilities. I have racked myself trying to figure out what to do or where to go to celebrate this passage of time. After all, I will be a speed limit this year (55) and there are so many things to do.

I’ve decided to make this month one of gratitude and giving. I have so many things to be grateful for and finding blessings in the simplest things like, breathing, my eyesight, and the ability to think clearly, I’ve decided it’s time to give back.

Making a list and checking it twice

This is my present to myself, to give and move forward. Today it started with a man who hangs out at one of the local McDonald’s in Kahana, HI. He doesn’t bother anyone, just sits in the furthermost corner of the restaurant and listens to his transistor radio or sips a cup of coffee.

Today, after placing my order, I stepped out of line just long enough to ask him if he wanted something to eat. He accepted my offer, and after giving him his food we chatted for a moment. We soon parted while the food was still hot, back to our own lives.

I will admit that giving feels great and I plan to do more this month. My list includes volunteering at a food bank and doing some programs on the island to help the shoreline and plant life. It may not mean much to anyone else but to me it’s a way to move out of myself and into the world around me.

How do you show gratitude and giving? Maybe your suggestions will help me move towards my goal. Mahalo.(Thanks)
